Changes to the Cervical screening program
In September 2023, HPV screening became the new method for cervical screening in Aotearoa New Zealand. HPV testing is a better first screening test. It looks for the human papillomavirus (HPV), which causes cell changes that may lead to cervical cancer.
This gives you options for how you have your screening sample taken:
a vaginal swab — you can either self-test, or a health professional can help
a cervical sample (previously known as a smear test) — taken by a health professional.
Cervical Screening
Having a smear test doesn't take long and is a simple procedure that is proven to save lives. Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable of all cancers and screening women every 3 years can reduce the risk of developing it by up to 90 percent.
Cervical smears are available with all doctors as a normal consult fee, and with our Smear Nurses Vanessa & Raewyn in the Nurse clinic. If you are unable to make the clinic times, please discuss with the nurses and we will try and find a suitable time. Smears are often funded through our PHO for many ladies - please ask us to see if you may qualify or would like a referral to our outreach service.
B4 School Checks
The B4 School Check for 4 year olds aims to identify and address any health, behavioural, social, or developmental concerns which could affect a child's ability to get the most benefit from school, such as a hearing problem or communication difficulty. Childhood immunisations are also given.
We try to make the check fun and interesting, and there is always a box of treasures given to your child to take home.
Vaccinations
Our trained vaccinators are passionate and knowledgeable about childhood immunisations, and travel vaccinations. Appointments for vaccinations can be made throughout the week.
Covid booster vaccination clinics are held regularly - these are also available at local pharmacies via www.bookmyvaccine.co.nz
Since 2014 we have held Annual community Flu vaccination clinics at Waihi Baptist Church all which are usually well enjoyed by all who attend.
Smoking Cessation Clinics
We are able to support you if you are ready to give up smoking. Our HCA Sarai is a trained cessation coach and is able to meet you one on one in the clinic, or provide telephone support, and the best part is that it's FREE!
